1. New personal best with a fly rod! This hawg was hanging shallow on a weed line along the dam. Unknowingly, I made a cast right into its lair. As I made my first ...more twitch with my foam spider, I watch it get sipped under. Thinking it was another bluegill tugging on its legs, I try to pull it away but it pulls back! A massive swirl sent weeds shaking and moss flying. In the excitement I missed the hook set and pulled the tiny fly from its lips. I thought I lost my chance at it. Hoping for another shot at glory, I cast again. Fly hits the water, I barely twitch it, again it's gently sipped under. Then it was on! I set the hook and it goes wild. Moss and mud go flying as it tears off for deeper water. The behemoth took me for quite a ride. I swear I saw smoke coming off my fingers as it pulled the fly line through them. We both have it our all but I managed to come out victorious. I have never had a funner, more satisfying catch as this. Now, I'm off to find a bigger bass or a carp!

Take that fly rod over to Clinton marina. Not sure if they are friendly about catching the carp there but there is a giant school of big ones there. I like to ...more feed them Cheetos when i go in there for a snack. They go nuts on anything that hits the top of the water right next to the building.

  3. 11 lb. 15 oz. Blue Catfish with a gob o' worm

  4. Fished The Kaw for the first time today and hooked into this beauty. It managed to snap my line at the reel during the battle. Luckily, my ninja like reflexes kicked ...more in before it realized it could swim off. I grabbed the line and managed to pull it in by hand. What a fun fight! Glad I decided to explore new waters today.

No this tributary is mud creek it's about 2 miles downstream from where you were today. Near 254th and Alexander road. Go upstream from the bridge on the creek ...more there are a couple of levees one every couple hundred yards lots of fish trapped in those pools. Good luck!

Pretty sure that's where I was today. I went to the access on north 8th St. I'm not familiar with the Kaw so I had to adapt. It's a whole different ball ...more game than fishing the MO. I'm use to fighting snags all day and needing a pound of weight to hold a bait in place. I'm gonna have to hit it more often now that I know how awesome it is out there!

Sounds like a fun time! I can point you to a flood relief tributary on the kaw right outside Lawrence that's pretty fun to fish it has a bunch of levees throughout ...more it that lock fish in after a heavy water spring like we had this year. It also has a bicycle path all the way along it giving perfect public access.

Marty, sadly we didn't get any bronzebacks during the electro fishing. However, last month a man told me his daughter caught one this year. I asked him if he ...more was sure it was a smallmouth and he acted offended so I believe him. They're far and few between if there's any in there.

Adam - did you folks get any smallies during the electro-shocking?

creek chub with a Hunk o' Worm

    1. Brian Quisenberry 0
Nine mile creek in Jefferson county is a good one for chub.

There's a lot of great creeks around and they are widely overlooked as fisheries. Tonginoxie creek around the VFW park in tonginoxie is pretty good but I haven't ...more fished it yet. The ones I fish are in Leavenworth. I've heard rumors of monster creek chubs in Atchison, 10 to 12 inchers, but don't know which creek for sure.
    3. Brian Quisenberry 0
That's some damn fine bait your catching!!! One of my favorite catfish baits!!

Do you ever catch any gar? I saw a longnose gar a few years ago when it flooded.
  9. 6 lb. 3 oz. Flathead Catfish with a cut bluegill

Good job Adam. That cut or live bluegill is hard to beat. I know that's one of my most favorite baits to use.
  10. 10 lb. 1 oz. 30 in. Blue Catfish with a cut drum

Fishing is my life. For generations, it has been handed down through the family. Put me next to a piece of water with a rod in my hand and I'm ...more a happy man. I fish for everything. There's a certain enjoyment I get from catching as many species as I can. Especially "trash fish". Common carp may be my favorite simply because the fight they provide. In Kansas, nothing makes your drag scream like a nice carp. I grew up with 20 inch bass in my front yard, bluegill for days and a mess of crappie to match. That's where I cut my teeth but that's not all I know. I've caught rainbow trout in Steelville, MO and smallmouth bass on the Kings River in Arkansas. " Flyover states " are where it's at and I wouldn't leave them for anything, even better fishing.
