  1. Details: Largemouth Bass

Hope everyone had a good Christmas. Went fishing early this morning at a spot that usually produces for me to try out my brand new Lews speed spool bass combo. Tried ...more throwing cranks and jerk baits early without any luck. Switched over to a finesse worm and still couldn't get anything. Only finally caught a bass on a white grub as well as an ambitious little perch. Slow slow bite, winter can mean

  2. Details: Largemouth Bass

The warm front today brought in a 75 degree warm day this December Sunday. I had to take the kayak out for the first time in what feels like forever. Water was cold ...more as crap and it took me a while to find the fish. They wouldn't touch crankbaits of grubs but when I switched to the pink finesse worm I got results. The wind made it tough and I had to work the worm fast but I was able to land 3 bass,

    1. Sean Wilms 0
@ScottB that pink worm always produces in the dark waters with leafy bottoms
    2. Sean Wilms 0
@Drew72 unfortunately I still don't have a place to store it done there for this semester either but when I have an apartment next year I'll definitely be ...more bringing it down
    3. Scott B 0
Awesome catches! Glad those Nikko worms are getting the job done for you.

Nicely done You taking the yak south after the break?
    5. Sean Wilms 0
A little 1bler, a decent 2lber, and a very nice and hard fighting 4lber! Felt great to kayak again and despite the 20mph gusts I was able to get it done today, good ...more to be home for a few.

  3. Details: Longnose Gar

I'm counting down my last few days in Virginia before I head to Jax FL for school. Yesterday was my last day in the kayak for a long time and I wanted to get ...more one last round going after one of my favorite fish. I caught several small ones feeding surprisingly deep and landed two very decent sized gar, the biggest one being 39" long and the other 36". Both fought impressively well, so much fun.

    1. Sean Wilms 0
Gotcha. Well maybe we can figure something out. Making the drive down there today actually @Matthew_L

    4. Matthew_L 0

    5. Sean Wilms 0
@Matthew_L I have no where to store the kayak otherwise I would.
    6. Matthew_L 0
Sounds great, we need some folks on the FWC commission with actual science backgrounds, not developers and real estate lawyers like we have now. Hope it goes well, ...more you should bring that kayak down!
    7. Sean Wilms 0

  4. Details: Channel Catfish

This afternoon I caught a mix bag of catfish, carp, crappie, and missed a bass fishing on the bottom with Shad. With one throw of the castnet I netted about 10lbs ...more if small Shad. The carp was on a Breadball and I couldn't let the Shad sit more then a minute without a small catfish or small crappie hitting it. Only decent fish was this 21" fat channel cat. He had some surprisingly nasty teeth and

  5. Details: Longnose Gar

Took my cousin gar fishing to get his first one on his last day here yesterday before he heads back to OH. The bite was super tough, one of the hardests bites to ...more get but we were still able to get a few. He landed the first one on his first try and I landed two more after that closer to sunset. All of them were decent sized between 31 and 34" long. Just big enough to give a fun hard fight.

    1. Sean Wilms 0
@TaylorG I have not but everytime I talk to the older fishermen that owns the marina that I launch from he tells me to take one home and try it cause he loves them

  6. Details: Longnose Gar

Set out to get some gar with a buddy and even though we had to chase them around and really search for them we still got a few. I hooked up to 5 gar total, landed ...more 3 of them with a 36" as the biggest of the day and still 31" as the smallest. I lost another one about that size when it bit through the line which rarely happens. The other one was a 40"+ monster that heart breakingly spit the hook.

80 deg air temp, water temp in low 80s, very little bait around. Overcast skies, NE wind, water slightly low, clarity very low, best bite right before sunset.
  7. Details: Longnose Gar

Today I also got my buddy his very first gar. He's an excellent fisherman but usually only goes after bass and carp. Today we set out to get his first and even ...more though the bite was strangely slow we still managed and he hooked one. His gar was 33" which is above average. He also got a nice size 3lb white catfish and brought him home for dinner, glad someone left happy.

  8. Details: American Eel

Today I realized it has been far too long since I caught a hard fighting bowfin so today I went to my bowfin spot to try for em with a variety of baits. Instead ...more I caught two other toothy creatures, a small gar and a big 2ft eel which I did not expect in the least. Still can't find the hard pulling mud fish, maybe next time. I did have one other big gar straight the hook on a run, it had to be big

  9. Details: Bluegill Sunfish

Highlight of my day was actually these very good sized sunfish. These are honestly the biggest ones I have ever caught in Virginia beach, they are usually much smaller. ...more All of them were 9-10" very hard fighters casting the grub over shallow weed and flats. Very aggressive attacks, fun fights. Even got the first one with a bronze nose gene. So it may not be much but these catches were good to me.

      Thanks @ScottB

  10. Details: Longnose Gar

Yesterday I had a nice little outing in the kayak at a spot I had only fished once before. Got lots of bites on the pink Nikko worm but most wouldn't commit ...more and all the bass were very small. Also had some luck on the roadrunner grub with small bass, perch, and a bunch of big bluegill. Stopped for gar fishing for the last hour and was only able to hook into one average one.
