  1. Catch-up post #3: This was the biggest of three that I caught on the first day of a two-day Angler of the Year (AOY) championship for the Keystone Bass Kayak Series. ...more It was a rough tournament for everyone. I ended up in 9th for the tournament, which placed me 4th in the overall AOY. I was in second at the end of the “regular season,” before the championship tournament. This bass, though, was big enough to win big bass for the tournament at 20”. The winnings from the big bass pot was almost as big as the 4th place finish in AOY. This smallmouth swiped at my plopper bait with its tail, sending it five feet in the air. I waited until it hit the water before cranking it a couple of turns with the bass striking it again but missing. I stopped the bait again for a 1/2 second, and then cranked hard. The bass came almost completely out of the water, chasing the bait horizontally for about two feet before engulfing it. It was probably one of the most exciting bites that I have experienced in my four decades of fishing.

Thanks, Bill. The location, which I keep private, is correct on the map. I don’t know why the app. calls this waterfront park. It’s not. It’s the Middle Allegheny.

20 inch smallmouth is the Holy Grail. Congratulations and thanks for sharing. I miss your posts on Lake Arthur. Glad I found you and the crew at Riverfront

  2. For the second straight trip, I caught a lot of smallmouth. Yesterday, it was 35. I did not get the size for this tournament (I finished 21st out of 56). My largest ...more was this one. I usually say, “Avoid the slack water, and look for breaks in the current.” Well, I caught this one in relatively slow and deep water. Goes to show, sometimes you just make the cast.

  3. Had a fun day floating with Drew, Mark, and Jim. Drew opened the day with a large smallie on his first cast. I had a big numbers day. These are the two biggest fish ...more out of 33 smallies. The one on the left was the heaviest at 2 lbs 10 oz. The one on the right was the longest at 17 1/4”.

  10. Another tournament in the books. This past weekend, I made another float down the Middle Allegheny for a Kayak Anglers of Western PA tournament. I was only able ...more to get a small limit of 5 smallmouth (must be 12 inches or more), though I caught 15 or so bass on the day. It was good enough to finish 17th out of 50 anglers. On this day, I just couldn’t find the big ones, though my first hookup was with a 18-19 incher that managed to shake the hook free while almost on the bank (I was wading the lower end of a riffle). That fish would have helped the cause. I did well enough to remain in the top five for the angler of the year race: http://www.kayak-anglers.com/chapters/western-pa/standings/?fbclid=IwAR0CmFhnTKsKC__1COTwBqUcyAS1LInDOqh0XhqZSfPKsRHJuX9rTnKmRw8. The last tournament is in a week and a half.
