Although not as large as their close muskellunge and northern pike relatives, the chain pickerel (esox niger) is among the most aggressive of all southern game fish. Their explosive ambush-style attacks and powerful runs make them a lot of fun to catch on light tackle.

This mouth is designed for capturing other fish. They're known to capture and try to consume fish equal to their own size. You don't want to thumb these fish if you catch one, as they have an abundance of sharp teeth.

The can live up to about 9 years, and prefer slow moving rivers, lakes and swamps.

That black bar that travels straight down from the eye distinguishes this from the similar redfin pickerel.
