About Bowfin

This odd-looking fish has a long dorsal fin that stretches nearly half the length of its thick body. This dorsal fin is dark green and has two horizontal stripes on it. Look for the large, dark blotch on the tail fin of the male to tell it apart from the female. Also known as dogfish, bowfin can come to the surface to “gulp” a breath of air as well as breathe underwater like other fish. Bowfin can be distinguished from Snakehead by having no scales on their head and a short rounded anal fin.
